Part III of our Orchei Vechi trip is a visit to the Traditional Peasant House. It is actually two houses, a main house or "casa mare" and a "basca" or summer house. The casa mare has two rooms. One is used for weaving work. Moldvans make beautiful rugs and wall coverings. The person standing next to the loom is our Moldovan guide. You can also see some of the Moldovan folk costumes which are richly embroidered. The second room in the house is a bed room. The short stone building is the hen house. Notice the finely thatched roof. All the buidlings have this style of roof. It is made by harvesting tall grasses and tying them tightly together after the grasses have been stripped and dried. The summer house or "basca" has the kitchen and company room. In this building is also the "baci" (bech) or cellar where wine and other foods are kept. Robyn, one of my Peace Corps group, is seated on the devan. Next episode we will visit the new monastery at Old Orhei.
Looks like fairly dry country--is this true? Enjoying your photos!

If it looks a bit dusty, that's because it has been 90+F for eight weeks and its only rained three times. An unusually hot summer here in Moldova.
DeleteDo men get to wear those very beautiful shirts? I can picture you wearing one and dancing a traditional dance!
ReplyDeleteYes. Men do get to wear those beautiful shirts. I'm sure that I will acquire one before the year is out. I've only had once chance to feel the spell of Moldovan dancing so far. I certainly hope to search out more opportunities.
